Hanoi’s millennial anniversary highlights national status

The 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi was celebrated successfully to honour its thousand-year-old civilization as well as the national history and cultural traditions.

This statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung at a meeting on January 5 to review activities concerning Hanoi’s millennial anniversary.

The successful celebration activities have contributed to elevating the capital city’s image and prestige among people throughout the country and international friends.

This could be seen clearly in five aspects:

First, the fine traditional values of the 1000-year history of Thang Long-Hanoi, the capital’s heroism, peace, friendship were honoured. Eighty-two doctoral laureate steles under the Le-Mac dynasties displayed at the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam) was recognised by UNESCO as the world heritage documents. The Thang Long-Hanoi Royal Citadel vestige complex was recognised as the world cultural heritage site and Vietnam’s Saint Giong Festival was recognised as intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

Second, celebration activities showed people’s patriotic spirit and national pride.

Third, the event added fresh impetus to Hanoi’s development which was demonstrated through more than 100 projects to refurbish the capital city, making it more beautiful and deserving its millennial birthday.

Fourth, the celebration activities helped to reinforce the great national unity bloc in the spirit of “The whole country for Hanoi and Hanoi for the whole country”.

Hundreds of new projects were launched, attracting millions of domestic and foreign visitors

Last but not least was the grand anniversary aimed at introducing and promoting Hanoi’s images to heighten the country’s status and prestige.

Mr Hung also attributed the success of the anniversary to the great efforts and close coordination by different ministries, sectors and localities, organizations and individuals throughout the country as well as the integrated strength of the entire Party and people.

Hanoi’s millennial anniversary has left behind the real spiritual and material values of the cultural tradition for Vietnamese people and next generations to grasp thoroughly the values of tangible and intangible cultures, he said.

Deputy PM Hung underscored the need to collect and preserve items of intangible culture to make them deserve the credit of 1000-year-old Hanoi.
