World-renowned Norwegian guitarist Magnus Andersson will perform along with Vietnamese artists at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatoire on April 3.

He will play around 10 well-known pieces composed by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Fernando Sor, Luigi Legnani, Francisco Tarrega, and Uros Rojko.

Duong Kim Dung, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Nguyen Thanh Huy and Huynh Ba Tho will join him in “Confession” (Romance) by Augustine Barrios Mangore, “Variations” from a theme, Op.107 by F.G. Haydn, “Tango Suit” by Astor Piazzilla, “Passing Away” by Uros Rojko and other pieces.

Dung will play solo, performing his forte, flamenco music. Huy and Tho will play a duet.

Andersson, born in Stockholm in 1956, has long been European’s leading contemporary guitarist and is thought to have played a major part in the creation of its modern repertoire.

He had many works written for him by leading composers like Brian Ferneyhough, James Dillion, Richard Barret and Rolf Riem.

Dung, 48, from Ho Chi Minh City began playing guitar in the public when he was 15.

In 1982 he won the first guitar solo award at the National Vocal and Instrumental Solo Competition.

He now teaches the guitar at the conservatoire and is a deputy chairman of the Vietnam Guitar Club.

Thao of Ho Chi Minh City studied the guitar for nine years from 1989 under Bui The Dung before getting an MA in teaching the guitar. She too is a teacher at the Conservatory.

Huy, 39, learnt the guitar from 1982 at the conservatory. He won first prize for 12-17-year-olds at the Classic Guitar Festival in 1985 in Ho Chi Minh City, the second prize and award for best fugue performance at the National Young Talent Guitar Competition in 1994.

Tho won the second prize at the National Young Talent Guitar Competition in 1994 in Ho Chi Minh City. He graduated in the guitar in 1996 at the conservatory.

The show is at 8pm at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music.
