Vietnam’s heritage site at Phong Nha-Ke Bang and the highest peak on the Indochina Peninsula, Fanxipang, were also amongst the leaders (placed 11th and 14th, respectively).
Currently, Ha Long is in its second phase of the four phase bid.
In the second phase, web site voters will be asked to provide their private e-mail addresses and finish a list of seven of the nominated sites as natural wonders of the world. Significantly, the nominees list is divided into regions including North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Oceania and Asia.
Twenty-one sites out of a short-list of 77 nominees, that will be announced in January 2009, will be selected by a board of advisors from the New Open World Organisation in the third phase.
The last phase will be done in the form of a global vote scheduled from 2009 to 2010.
The organisation plans to release the final result in the summer of 2010.
