The city was named Thang Long (Rising Dragon) in 1010. In honour of its long history, a giant, 7-m high, unique digital clock has been erected with its roof and two pillars modeled after those of traditional temples like Khue Van Cac (Literature Pavillion) at Van Mieu (the Temple of Literature). Two flying dragons make up the pillar.
The festival called Khoanh khac Thang Long-Hanoi (Thang Long-Hanoi’s Moment), and the countdown ceremony began after cutting one string attached to the five-coloured flag presently covering the clock face.
During the event, Le Thach and Le Lai streets held an out-door exhibition, Memories of Old Hanoi, featuring large photos and paintings of both modern day and old Hanoi.
Moreover, a fashion show, a culinary festival, handicrafts, ca tru (ceremonial singing) and games filled Le Lai Street and revealed how 19 century Hanoians once lived.
The grand ceremony will be held on October 10, 2010.
