The congress’s success was attributed to its well-prepared work, ranging from drafting documents to nominating delegates with the active participation of Party members and people from all walk of life.

During more than one-week working, the congress completed a huge amount of work and approved important documents which is of strategic significance to national development, not only in the next five years but also until 2020 and the following years.

The congress took place in an open, democratic and responsible manner through discussion of heated issues.

Even at the closing session, some delegates suggested some changes in documents to make them more accurate and closer to reality.

The Party Central Committee, Politburo and Secretariat’s admission of their short-coming and weaknesses in the past term helped to consolidate the people’s trust in the Party leadership.

Despite some different opinions about draft documents, all delegates reached the final decision.

There were also changes in the election of the Party Central Committee, Politburo and General Secretary. They did not directly elect the General Secretary but reserved their rights to introduce potential candidates for such an important position.

Before and during the Congress, all Party members and people closely followed the selection of potential candidates to important positions and expressed hopes that the congress would choose qualified and virtuous leaders for the next term.

Basically their expectations were met as the newly appointed Party Central Committee promised to assume and fulfill assigned tasks by the people, the nation and the Party.

The political platform for the transitional period to socialism in Vietnam (supplemented and revised in 2011) was revised and developed. The socio-economic development strategy for the 2011-2020 period was identified and political orientations and tasks for the 2011-2015 period were approved.

The national development targets for the next five years include continuing to raise the leadership capacity and combative strength, accelerating the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, building a strong political system, upholding democracy and national great unity, developing the economy rapidly and sustainably, improving the people’s living condition, maintaining social and political stability, enhancing external relations activities, maintaining independence, sovereignty, and unity and laying foundations for the country to basically become a modernity-oriented industrialised nation by 2020.

Such guidelines, both long-term and short-term, are clear. The management apparatus for the next period is ready to lead the nation. To turn the national development targets for the next five, ten and 20 years into reality, the newly-appointed Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, said that the entire Party, people and army will uphold their patriotism and spirit of self-reliance, self-improvement, and strengthen the great national unity bloc in an effort to implement the Congress’s Resolution successfully, step up the renewal process in a comprehensive manner for the sake of the country’s fast and sustainable development toward the goal of a wealthy people, a strong, democratic, equal, civilised country, firmly advancing toward socialism.
