Sandwiched among some middling, tourist-oriented hotels, the Dong A has been offering the cheapest dorm beds in Hanoi for nearly two years. Strangely, they have had surprisingly few takers. The beds are quite good: comfortable, each comes with its own fan and electrical outlet, and a curtain for privacy during the night. They keep things clean and acceptably odour free. You'll have to negotiate with your bunk mates as to when to turn off the overhead fluorescent lighting, but other than that, it's more than what you'd expect for the price. There are some caveats: management are notoriously cranky and only one small bathroom serves 20-plus beds, though it does have a hot water shower. They roll down the security gate at about 23:00. You can get in at any time by knocking, though expect a chilly reception. One reliable source says they woke up for an early flight and couldn't leave because no one had the key to the electric door. They made it, but only after a half hour of aggravation. Still it's a good place if you want a cheap sleep, but you aren't up for the backpacker scene at the other dorm-style outfits. It's also the perfect place to go if you just want to catch some kip during the day, or you have an awkward layover that doesn't span the night. Rooms here, too, are decent. Though they have few exterior windows except on the upper floors, they are sufficiently well-done up and comfortable. Depends on why you're in Hanoi, but if you've just had all your cash cards stolen and are waiting for new ones to arrive in the mail, the dorm here is the place you want to be.
